RIC VI Aq 70a; Fail 055

Galerius augustus follis. $20—
—struck by Severus II
Aquileia, 305-306
obv.- IMP MAXIMIANVS PF AVG; Laureate head right
rev.- FIDES MILITVM AVGG ET CAESS NN; Fides standing left, holding two legionary standards; AQP in ex.
RIC VI Aq 60b; Fail 44
28mm; 8.8g; follis
The reverse legend translates as, "The loyalty of the soldiers of our Emperors and Caesars" which is a bit ironic since Severus' troops ultimately did in fact desert him. Obviously this coin is kind of rough, but well-discounted considering this is a desirable type and relatively scarce.

Rome (republic) denarius. $240— (reduced again!)
—struck by C. Mamilia Limetanus
Rome, 82 BC
obv.- Head of Mercury wearing winged petasus right, caduceus behind, F above
rev.- C MAMIL LIMETAN; Ulysses walking right, his dog Argus before
RSC Mamilia 6; Crawford 362/1; Syd. 741
19mm; 3.2g; silver

Deep, old collection toning with iridescent luster. Well-struck from somewhat worn dies; only the tiniest amount of actual wear. Looks like maybe a small chip in the die around the mouth? Nice provenance: ex-Spink, Sale 8019, Sept. 2008; ex Harwood Collection, Glendining, October 8 1975, lot 149. Includes original handwritten collection tag.

From Seaby: "The reverse shows Ulysses, after an absence of many years, returning in a mean and humble dress to the island of Ithaca, where he was at once recognized by his old dog Argus, who died of joy at seeing his former master." There's several currently available on vcoins, the nicest of which are $500; this is as nice or nicer than any of them. Hurry if you want this, before I change my mind and decide to keep it.

RSC Annia 1; Cr. 366/4; Syd. 749
18mm; 3.7g; Silver

Reasonably uncommon variety; I don't see another example on vcoins, but a similar Annia 2, in comparable condition, is available for $375. Ex Spink, Sale 8019, Sept. 2009; ex Glendining, Sept. 10, 1989 (£44). Includes original handwritten collector tag.

from Seaby: "Anna Perenna was the sister of Dido and was worshipped in Italy as a rustic deity. It may be that this gens claimed descent from her."

Diocletian follis. $30—
—struck by Diocletian
Nicomedia, 294
obv.- IMP CC VAL DIOCLETIANVS PF AVG; laur bust right
rev.- GENIO POPVLI ROMANI; SMN in ex
RIC VI Nic 27a
29mm; 7.5g; follis
I know what you're thinking, "Diocletian follis, Nicomedia, right—dime-a-dozen," but this is actually surprisingly scarce. This is from the very first issue of reformed coins struck in in 294; and since this was struck in Nicomedia, which was Diocletian's capital and residence at the time (hence the "SM" in the mintmark), this can legitimately be considered the original Tetrarchy follis. Just about all the other coins from this mint will have SMN with an officina letter. Go ahead, find another on on ebay or vcoins. Decent portrait in fine style, but lesser grade reverse knocks down the price to $45. Good budget example to fill that hole in your collection.

Excellent example for the price. Black patina on a broad, heavy flan. Superior portrait style. Terrific opportunity for the collector on a budget to acquire a nice example of this desireable type. Note: You can see a scrape on the chin that looks like an old mark that has begun to repatinate, otherwise this would be a lot more expensive.
